What it does

Shipped

New File ▸

Create a new file from the Finder right-click menu

Right-click empty space in a folder, choose New File, pick a template. The file appears right there, selected.

Press Return to rename it, or open it and start typing. Foldkin works only in the folders you choose, so it stays out of the way everywhere else.

Shipped

New File ▸ Markdown

Make a new Markdown or plain text file from Finder

Markdown and Plain Text come built in, with templates for Python, JavaScript, CSV, XML and more.

A new Markdown or Plain Text file starts empty, ready for you to type.

Shipped

Templates

Turn your own files into templates for new files

Add your own templates, from a meeting note to a JSON stub, and list them in the order you want.

Write a template in Foldkin, or start from a file of up to 1 MB by dragging it onto Foldkin's window or using New Template from File… in the app. You choose the extension, and the name each new file gets.

Shipped

untitled 2.md

New files never replace the ones already there

If untitled.md is taken, the next file is untitled 2.md. Foldkin never overwrites a file.

The name is checked at the moment the file is written, not when the menu opens, so nothing that appeared in between is replaced.

Toolbar button

Create files from the Finder toolbar, too

Add the Foldkin button to Finder's toolbar for the same templates, right at the top of the window.

In Finder, choose View ▸ Customize Toolbar… and drag Foldkin onto the toolbar. Outside the folders you chose, the button says it can’t create files there.

Recently used templates

Keep the templates you used last at the top of the menu

Show recently used templates first, and the ones you used last lead the menu. The list never leaves your Mac.

Show them as their own group above the rest, or sort the whole menu by when you last used each one. Turning it off forgets the list.

20 templates come built in

A fresh install puts Plain Text, CSV, XML, JavaScript, Markdown and Python in the New File menu. To add any of the others, select it in Foldkin and turn on “Show in New File menu”. Every one of the 20 is an ordinary template: rename it, reorder it or delete it, and Restore Built-in Templates brings back any you deleted. Some start empty, and some with a few lines to start from.

Your own, from the apps you use

Save an empty document from the app you use, then drag it onto Foldkin's window, or add it with New Template from File… in the app. Any file of up to 1 MB works, except a package: a folder that Finder shows as one file, such as an .rtfd. New File then makes a fresh copy of it each time.

Foldkin sends nothing off your Mac.

It makes no network connections. It has no analytics, no account and nothing to sign in to, and your templates and settings stay on your Mac.

It works only where you allow it.

You choose the folders Foldkin works in, and New File appears in those and the folders inside them. It never needs access to your whole disk.

It never overwrites a file.

A name that is taken gets a number, as in untitled 2.md, and the file already there is left exactly as it was.

Questions

How do I create a new file from the Finder right-click menu on a Mac?

Finder has New Folder but no New File. Install Foldkin and open it: its Get started page has two steps, turning on its Finder extension and adding the folders it works in. Then right-click empty space inside one of them and choose New File.

How do I make a new Markdown file in Finder?

Right-click empty space inside a folder you added to Foldkin and choose New File ▸ Markdown. An empty untitled.md appears in that folder, selected.

Why does New File not appear in every folder?

Foldkin works only in the folders you choose, and in the folders inside them. Right-click empty space or a file there. Add a folder with Add Folder… on Foldkin's Get started page or in its window. That way it never needs access to your whole disk.

How do I turn on the Foldkin Finder extension?

macOS asks you to switch Finder extensions on yourself, in System Settings. Foldkin's Get started page makes that its first step, with an Open Extension Settings… button. If the extension is switched off later, Foldkin's window says so and offers the same button.

Does Foldkin collect any data?

No. Foldkin makes no network connections, and has no analytics and no account. Your templates and settings stay on your Mac. The privacy page has the details.

Which version of macOS does Foldkin need?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

What does Foldkin cost?

Nothing. Foldkin is free.
